Garden Group
Who are we? We are a special interest group of Dulwich Society members. Some 270 local households belong. There is no charge to join providing you are already a member of the Dulwich Society. Anyone who enjoys gardens or gardening is very welcome to join. If you would like to participate in our activities, please telephone Eileen Thorne, our membership secretary (020 8761 0057) or Email John Ward on jjbwrd@btopenworld.com. We will then let you have invitations to visit a number of local gardens and details of our other activities. These invitations are usually distributed in April and June.
What do we do? 1. We visit 8-10 local gardens each year - usually on Sunday afternoons. These visits are perhaps our most important activity - they are a source of ideas and information for our members as well as being enjoyable social occasions. We usually make a voluntary collection to raise funds for a charity nominated by the householder. 2. A free lecture is arranged each year, usually in March or April. This year, Tom Hart Dyke will be speaking on 'Plant Hunting and Planting' on Thursday, April 6. Tom Hart Dyke is an enthusiastic botanist, lover of plants and a hunter of rare plants and orchids. He has travelled extensively in South East Asia, Australia and the Americas. He was ambushed by guerrillas in Panama whilst looking for orchids in 2000 and held captive for nine months. His fully illustrated talk will be about his travels, his love of plants and the episode during his captivity which led to the creation of 'The World Garden' at his home, Lullingstone Castle, Kent, which opened at Easter 2005. Admission to the lecture is free. 8.00pm at the St Barnabas Centre, Calton Avenue. 3. Two full day coach outings are organised every year. The first of these will be on Tuesday, June 20 when we will be visiting 'The Beth Chatto Gardens' and 'Olivers'. Both of these gardens are near Colchester. The Beth Chatto garden is famous for drought resistant Mediterranean plants as well as luxuriant water gardens, while Olivers is set around three small lakes. Further details and reservations from Ina Pulleine. Tel. 8670 5477 after 11.00am 4. To encourage interest in a particular plant type, we hold an annual competion. Past subjects have included Clematis, Geraniums, Dahlias, Fuschias, Roses and even a Tomato tasting.
How you can help us Join the Group and take part in our activities. Better still, open your garden to our members. We look forward to hearing from you.
