Trees Sub-Committee

Dulwich has many interesting trees. For instance this zelkova, which is a member of the elm family and stands at the crossing between Dulwich Common and College Road. Our aim is to protect the trees throughout Dulwich and plant new ones where possible.

This oak is one of four trees planted in the village in memory of past chairmen, there is one at the crossing between Burbage and Turney Road, a golden ash in the village itself and a liquid amber at the bottom of Court Lane.

We arrange annual tree walks and lectures, co-operate with Southwark Council over street trees and accompany the Estate Governors on their tree inspections.

Our project over the last five years has been at Long Meadow near Gipsy Hill roundabout where we have planted 28 interesting trees such as a deodon cedar, a wych elm, a balsam poplar and country hedges round the edge. We persuaded Southwark Council to stop mowing all the grass and let the buttercups flower.

Our next project is at Belair Park, where we are planning to plant a dozen ornamental trees on the mansion side.

We are always glad to learn about unusual trees or ones in danger.
